Michael J. Weinstein LL.B., B.A.
Michael practices civil litigation with a focus on construction law matters and commercial disputes. Michael is frequently consulted by owners, contractors, subcontractors, engineers, architects, and suppliers to provide strategic advice in connection with construction projects and builders’ lien issues. He also regularly handles insurance litigation, landlord and tenant disputes, employment matters, shareholder disputes, defamation claims, and personal injury lawsuits.
He has appeared before all levels of Court in Manitoba as well as the Tax Court of Canada and the Supreme Court of Canada. He has also appeared as counsel in various arbitrations and mediations, particularly relating to construction disputes.
In 2019, Michael was recognized as a “Litigation Star” by Benchmark Litigation Canada.
He has a particular interest in alternative dispute resolution. He is a past winner of the International Negotiation Competition for Law Students and since 2008 he has coached the University of Manitoba negotiation team. In 2015 and 2016, Michael taught the negotiation course at Robson Hall. He regularly conducts negotiation workshops for students in the Robson Hall negotiation course and for articling students in the CPLED program.
Michael is a member of the Law Society of Manitoba, the Canadian Bar Association, and the Manitoba Bar Association, where he serves as co-chair of the construction law section. Outside of the practice of law, he is involved in various community activities. He currently serves as the chair of the Board of Directors of the MS Society of Canada, Manitoba Division, and as a member of the Board of Directors of B’nai Brith Jewish Community Camp.
